The Dallas County area, with its 31 cities, has a long history of prioritizing vehicular transportation over other modes, especially bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. While some progress has been made in developing a connected trail network in the north, more affluent part of Dallas County, the southern half of Dallas County has lagged far behind. In 2017, Dallas County helped spearhead the Southern Dallas County Regional Veloweb alignment study to identify the first regional trail alignment in southern Dallas County. Since then, the county has worked with the many cities in the area to implement segments of this regional trail alignment in compliance with the County’s Mobility Plan, adopted in 2019. This presentation will discuss how the county is partnering with cities in Southern Dallas County to develop an extensive regional trail network through unique funding partnerships and individual projects. We will highlight two recently completed multimodal projects that have connected over 6.5 miles of trail through innovative partnerships with three cities. We will also highlight the funding, planning, design, and construction processes of these two projects and how the projects have helped shape the development of this regional trail network. Dallas County, in conjunction with local, regional, and state partners, is working together to bring the vision of the Southern Dallas County Regional Veloweb to life one segment at a time.
