This session will allow attendees to understand all the planning and preparation required to host a major international event like the World Cup. We will explore how to move large amounts of people largely by alternative transportation modes and how to procure those supplemental fleets. Attendees will learn what capital improvement projects are needed for the event’s success and what projects are wanted as part of a legacy. Other policy development and coordination like wayfinding, permit moratoriums, solid waste management, and security strategies will also be explored. The session will close with an interactive pseudo peer “blind spot” review. Those in attendance will be asked and encouraged to try and identify areas of concern that may have been missed or overlooked by Kansas City’s planning for the World Cup matches. This could be a two-part series in which the planning and preparation is presented in PWX 2025 and the results and lessons learned from the event can be shared at PWX 2026. I would be happy to include speakers from other agencies and communities either as requested or directed by APWA. Accredited Agency: Kansas City, MO, Public Works Department

After this session, participants will be better able to:
• Develop a multimodal strategy to move international visitors to major events without automobiles as the primary mode.
• Prepare asset and right-of-way management policies in preparation of a large international event.
• Embed a new transportation microsystem for a series of major events within a region’s larger existing transportation ecosystem.
