With ever-expanding requirements on public works and an aging workforce, it is even more important to “build the bench” by developing future leaders from within current ranks. But who is responsible for actually handling the development of employees? So often, it seems we are all pointing fingers at each other, or the issue is in constant flux between human resources (HR) and business units. The need is great and requires a long-term commitment. This presentation will cover the different roles that HR and the business units have and share some current practices employed, as well as ideas for future programs.  The audience will be encouraged to share any recent successes they are experiencing in building future leaders from within.

After this session, participants will be better able to:
• Assess who is responsible for succession planning.
• Select potential future leaders from the current rank and file.
• Create opportunities to develop existing personnel into future leaders.
