Yarmouth operates the oldest functioning municipally-owned farm in New England. The farm dates to 1639. A historic barn on the property was severely deteriorated. As a result, the Town of Yarmouth undertook a substantial renovation project to prevent further structural decay. The refurbished barn preserved a historic community asset and provided an enhanced support structure for the farm operators.
After this session, participants will be better able to:
• Explain the critical components of a challenging process to renovate a historic barn.
• Describe an alternative project delivery method that combines outside contractors and municipal workers to control costs and provide enhanced input into the final product.
• Illuminate the need to build partnerships with key community stakeholders to deliver a project supported by historic, conservation, and neighborhood groups.
