Planning for pedestrians and bicyclists during highway construction projects can sometimes be an afterthought. This session will review how the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in the Waco District addressed pedestrian and bicycle safety during a years-long construction project along IH-35. Attendees of this session will learn the value of: A local stakeholder steering committee to offer recommendations, guide, and distribute messaging. Pedestrian and bicyclist counts before, during, and after construction. The use of pavement clings. A webpage dedicated to pedestrian/bicyclist updates. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Holistically consider the safety and mobility of all modes of travel during construction.
• Recognize the effective simplicity of pavement clings and how they are enhanced through construction travel.
• Recognize the value of assembling a stakeholder group made up of groups and individuals directly impacted by the construction.
