In 2021, the fast-growing City of Grimes embarked on professionalizing GIS within the city. Before hiring staff, unguided consultants were the mapping experts of the city with limited data integrity. New city staff crafted a vision with executive buy-in and created a transition plan to a new GIS platform for all city staff to use. We now have a new process, informed by hard-knock lessons learned, that empowers users and promotes data ownership within departments. We’ve purchased hardware and software, worked with consultants, sped up delivery, and streamlined access for users. Come hear our story that we’ve worked on for four years earning a Special Achievement in GIS award.

After this session, participants will be better able to:
• Conduct a thoughtful evaluation of their current data and identify future needs.
• Develop a data and user transition plan with GIS versus management versus end user perspectives.
• Practice a “new way” data integrity process by allowing key staff to take ownership of their data.
