In addition to his role as Technical Director of Transportation, Darren L. Schulz also acts as the Board of Directors Liaison for the Utilities and Public Rights-of-Way (UPROW) Committee and Transportation Committee.
Schulz has been the Public Works Director for Carson City, Nevada, for the past ten years. His department oversees transportation, water, wastewater, stormwater, streets, landfill, fleet, engineering, and facilities for the city. His department has an annual operating budget of more than $50M and manages an annual city capital budget of $80M, he also oversees 160 full-time staff. Schulz has more than 30 years of diverse public works administration, project management, civil engineering design, and construction management experience in both the public and private sectors.
He has been a member of APWA for over 25 years. He was elected to the Nevada Chapter Board in 2008 and has served on the Board ever since, including as Chapter President in 2013. Schulz has served on many branch and chapter committees over the years. In 2017, the Nevada Chapter recognized him with the prestigious Robert Broadbent Distinguished Service Award for leadership and contribution to APWA and the public works profession. On the National level, he has been a part of the Council of Chapters, serving as Delegate for Nevada starting in 2018 and was an Alternate Delegate before that. He has served on several committees and task force groups, including the Awards Committee, PACE Review Committee, National Nominating Committee, and the Advocacy Committee. He is the Nevada Chapter Advocacy Ambassador and has attended over 20 APWA Congress/PWX Conferences. In 2017 he was selected as a Top Ten Public Works Leader of the Year by APWA.
