In the winter of 2022–2023, the four positions responsible for snow and ice control in the Village of Barrington were all new to the department and/or their positions. The two snow commanders were promoted earlier in the year, the superintendent position was vacant until January, and the director started in October. While the snow commanders had experience working for Barrington, they had no experience as supervisors. Conversely, the superintendent came over from the tollway, and the director had been serving as director in a nearby municipality, but this was the first winter for both in Barrington. While there was plenty of public works experience, they were all new to their roles in Barrington. In addition, a large percentage of front-line staff had little to no experience plowing snow. Scrambling to put together a plan for the winter season took patience, communication, training, and total teamwork. A solid foundation was developed, and the presenters will tell you how it worked out and how they are planning for the future!

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be better able to:

• Identify the needs of an inexperienced staff.
• Assemble a snow and ice control plan from the ground up.
• Lead a staff through significant change in leadership.
