Public works officials are regularly called upon to engage in public speaking presentations to community groups and elected officials to include controversial topics with sometimes hostile audiences. We need to learn good public speaking skills to convey the message without distraction but with persuasion. These skills can be taught, developed, and practiced to mastery. Presentations on community issues require special skills. This session will focus on the key elements allowing the presenter to be a great communicator with the special skills and best practices needed to address controversial issues, avoid errors in presentations, and overcome the fear of public speaking. The author, based upon decades of personal experience in both the private and public sectors, will train the attendees in the techniques and skills needed to be confident, persuasive, and skilled presenters with great public speaking skills. The author has made hundreds of presentations and dealt with controversial topics in public settings with great success when leading groups, when addressing elected officials, when making presentations to boards and when presenting difficult choices to the public.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Prepare for a public speaking event to include written and verbal outlining and practice.
• Recognize what to do and what t to do during public speaking and presentations to include their physical presence, mannerisms, speaking style, types of presentation materials, connecting to their audience, and errors to avoid.
• Navigate tough questions from their audience, how to address these at a personal and professional level, and how to properly respond.
