The U.S. Senate on December 8, 2022, confirmed Shailen Bhatt as the nation’s 21st Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The vote came nearly six months after President Biden nominated him to the post on July 21, 2022. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) also announced Mr. Bhatt’s confirmation in a press release.

A veteran of both the Delaware and Colorado DOTs, as well as the Obama-era FHWA, Mr. Bhatt assumes his role with a wealth of experience in the transportation sector. Most recently, he was Senior Vice President for Global Transportation Innovation at AECOM, a technology corporation known for its services in engineering, consulting, and project management services.

As administrator of FHWA, Mr. Bhatt will be responsible for administering more than $350 billion as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), including critical competitive grants, formulaic programs available to local governments, state departments of transportation, and federal land management agencies.

APWA congratulates Mr. Bhatt on his confirmation and looks forward to working together to deliver on the promise of IIJA and ensure America gets the infrastructure it both needs and deserves.
