• The start of a new Congress means new public policy priorities for APWA;
  • Our 118th Public Policy Priorities remain: Emergency Management, Transportation, and Water Resiliency;
  • For awareness, every two years, and to align with the Congressional election cycle, the APWA Government Affairs Committee, Government Affairs staff, and volunteers from APWA technical committees review and revise the organization’s priorities to ensure they remain current and best aligned to support the work of APWA’s membership;
  • Once the priorities are drafted, the APWA Board of Directors reviews and has the final vote and approval of the priority documents;
  • The APWA Government Affairs team began distributing the new policy documents last week and will continue stopping by all 535 House and Senate offices to share the priorities in person;
  • The 118th Congress convened last week and the U.S. House of Representatives kicked off the year electing a Majority Leader, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY);
  • The U.S. Senate elected its leadership, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY), in December;
  • The House this week will focus on adopting operating rules for the new Congress and organizing committees and their memberships;
  • The Senate will not conduct legislative business again until the week of Jan. 23;
  • We encourage all APWA members to take a few minutes in the coming days to electronically share APWA’s new policy priorities with your U.S. Representatives and Senators. All policy documents can be downloaded and shared.
