Every attendee at an APWA conference brings with them the experiences and challenges of their agency and their role in public operations. You may have many different stories you could tell. The lessons could be about your operations, invations, or perhaps some new program your agency introduced. Maybe you have some leadership thoughts you could share. The story may be that your agency needs to change. It could be you implemented changes and experienced both successes and failures. Everyone has experiences to share, but they often don’t believe their experiences are relevant or are concerned about delivering them. This session is about how to begin. The presenters will share their first experiences in presenting and their successes and failures. They will discuss how they overcame issues of presenting in front of a group. They will discuss how to get started and the dos and don’ts. The presenters will also offer opportunities to take the first steps in sharing your story. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Recognize the challenges others underwent transitioning from audience members to presenting in front of a group.
• Determine how to prepare and the common mistakes made in preparing and delivering a presentation.
• Identify new tools and mentors that will help in sharing their stories.
