The Roadway Safety Institute, a federally funded University Transportation Center led by the University of Minnesota, is sponsoring this conference workshop led by Professor Ron Van Houten, a pedestrian safety expert from Western Michigan University. During the workshop, Dr. Van Houten will discuss factors related to pedestrian crashes, pedestrian safety assessments, and innovative treatments to improve pedestrian safety at traffic signals and at marked uncontrolled crosswalks. He will explain how to reduce midblock crashes, address the needs of special populations, and change the safety culture on a community-wide basis. He will also touch on installation and maintenance issues related to pedestrian countermeasures recently added to the countermeasures toolbox. After his classroom presentation, Dr. Van Houten leads attendees of the live presentation on a walking tour of both effective and ineffective crosswalk treatments near the Minneapolis Convention Center. He will also demonstrate his innovative use of R1-6 In-Street Pedestrian Crossing signs.
