Waste diversion and collection have been challenging for many commercial properties and municipalities across North America. In this session, the presenters will discuss smart city technology for waste and organic containment and diversion in urban centers. They will review the results from their recent smart bin pilot projects within Canada and the US, reviewing data on level measurement, hands-free technology, compaction, and odor in various climates. They will present opportunities to encourage and monitor usage leading to higher diversion rates. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Discuss the semi-underground containment method, its economic benefits, and the groundbreaking technology supporting this innovation.
• Explain smart city technology and how it is impacting the evolution of waste collection and monitoring.
• Define touchless access control and auto-locking mechanisms, which not only meet accessibility act requirements but also discourage unauthorized dumping and scavenging.
