In 2015, TxDOT identified the need to develop and train its young workforce to strengthen their project management for large infrastructure projects. Kimley-Horn was hired by TxDOT to develop training courses and invative tools to engage adult learners and enhance project management across the agency. The training consisted of development and instruction of ten separate classes. Key outcomes of the project management training include application of project management skills and certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP). In the eight years since the creation and implementation of training courses, TxDOT has demonstrated a higher level of project management skills, and as a result, the agency has delivered a historic $12 billion portfolio of projects in the 2023 fiscal year. The agency anticipates maintaining this level of service for the next ten years. In this presentation, we will share the strategy for developing an engaging and applicable project management program for public agency staff, outline invative training methods for both in-person and virtual environments, and summarize the successful results of training initiatives.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Review best practices for developing a project management employee training program.
• Explore invative training methods for in-person and virtual instructor-led training.
• Develop a plan to kickstart project management training for your organization.
