In vember 2021, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) delivered the $2.17 billion Mid-Coast Trolley Extension to the San Diego region, on time and on budget. The project is an extension of the Blue Line Trolley, which w provides a one-seat ride between the busiest international border crossing in the world at San Ysidro to the University City area of San Diego, California. The project serves residential communities, beach areas, a Veterans Administration hospital, the University of California at San Diego campus, and numerous businesses and shopping centers—significantly improving regional access to healthcare, education, employment, and recreation areas. The project was built using the Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) delivery method, making this one of the largest horizontal construction projects ever delivered in this fashion in the US. This session will also explore the success factors of cultivating extraordinary partnerships and fostering effective coordination among regional stakeholders to deliver a transformative project. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Define the CM/GC process and its unique elements and advantages.
• Determine the value of the CM/GC process and how to manage and build a strong team committed to creative problem-solving.
• Successfully implement a CM/GC delivery method.
