Municipal rights of way serve many public interests,  A place for utilities is one of those interests. That ROW is becoming more crowded, filled with a  mixture of scrap, abandoned facilities, and active utilities and storm structures of all kinds. This congestion causes issues for new projects and for continuing maintenance and operational needs.  The American Society of Civil Engineers, in conjunction with organizations such as APWA, has developed some solutions to the investigation and documentation of these ROW hidden structures that facilitate efficient effective utility coordination efforts.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this session, participants will be better able to:

  1. Identify the complexity of the underground structure environment within our ROW.
  2. Recognize where to find current information on writing a scope of work to include competent utility investigations for capital improvement projects.
  3. Explain the qualifications necessary to perform comprehensive utility investigations in accordance with the only national engineering standard on this topic.
