The City of Boston’s Public Works Department (PWD) the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics (MONUM) have worked together, in collaboration with other city agencies and community partners, to develop a new program called StreetCaster: a more equitable approach to allocating resources for infrastructure, starting with sidewalk replacements and repairs. Through the program, the City is creating new networks of sidewalks in areas that need them most, while simultaneously improving the way that resident requests for repairs through the City’s 311 system are addressed. StreetCaster is an equity-focused, data-driven approach to plan, implement, and communicate street infrastructure investments. Through StreetCaster, Boston will eliminate the infrastructure gap in disadvantaged neighborhoods and provide better services to all.

Learning Objectives:

1. Begin planning a better approach to planning infrastructure repair locations, focusing on equity and resiliency.

2. Prepare a communications plan related to this work.

3. Evaluate the success of infrastructure repairs in new ways.
