Drones or Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) are having positive effects on the design and maintenance of public facilities and infrastructure. However, this is not the only robotic platform that can add value to transportation maintenance and design projects. A variety of platforms can be automated to collect remotely sensed data at resolutions never seen before. These robots now collect data on land, underwater, and in the air. These tools produce data on the scale of not just gigabytes, but terabytes and potently petabytes. This session will explore current innovations in open source robotics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to automate processes that allow accuracies that represent real-world environments. This new breed of robots utilizes 3-D laser scanning, thermography, acoustic imaging, and high-resolution photographs to give engineers tools that enhance the speed and accuracy of assessing projects, while reducing cost and increasing safety.

Learning Objectives:

1. Explore how opensource robotics can be integrated into asset management.

2. Examine how to determine if a consumer technology is right for the data need.

3. Determine how to store, analyze and interpret this data in a meaningful, cost effective ways.
