The Industrial Waste Management Division of LA Sanitation and Environment (LASAN) was a major contributor to the Water Research Foundation (WRF) Report, “Leveraging Pretreatment Programs for One Water Initiatives: Synthesis of Best Practices and Path Forward.” The WRF Report detailed the evolution of the pretreatment program in the 50 years since the passing of the Clean Water Act in 1972. In the report, LASAN discussed their shifting focus to include One Water, environmental justice, ecomic development, and other green initiatives in their pretreatment program planning. LASAN’s Industrial Waste Management Division (IWMD) was a major contributor to developing a 2021 WRF survey, the WRF Report, and was one of five case studies cited in the report. Per Mayor Garcetti’s 2019 Sustainability pLAn, the City of Los Angeles is to achieve 100% water recycling by 2035 and to source 70% of drinking water locally by 2035. To achieve the Sustainability pLAn goals, the pretreatment program has to be robust and adaptable. IWMD is the first line of defense in preventing harmful pollutants that can potentially upset the treatment system from entering the waste stream. This presentation will discuss how IWMD is already incorporating One Water ideologies in its current practices and putting the WRF recommendations into practice. The work done by Industrial Waste can serve as a model to other agencies. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Recognize the concept of One Water and One Water planning.
• Identify the interconnectedness of One Water and pretreatment programs.
• Incorporate the WRF recommendations into their pretreatment program.
