In a post-pandemic world, public works officials will need to enhance their resiliency, add layers of redundancy, and most importantly–re-configure their systems to operate “virtually everything–virtually.” Beyond simply operating some software systems in the cloud, agencies will need to access their entire databases and develop citizen touchpoints using experiential design—from anywhere—to fully maintain service. Two cities will be highlighted as case studies: Cerritos and Jurupa Valley. Both are well on their way to full municipal functionality from anywhere. Resilient benefits are only obtained if the city embraces the basic tenets of smart city architecture—sustainable, converged, resilient, smart, and safe from the ground up. The severity and swiftness of the downturn require decisive action and a dynamic community response as we must now develop a “new normal” that will contribute directly to the community’s stability and recovery.

Learning Objectives

After attending this session, participants will be better able to:

  1. Understand the need to enhance resiliency, add redundancy, operate “virtually everything–virtually” as they develop a new “normal,” and create stable, future-proofed, resilient, critical, intelligent infrastructure and smart cities.
  2. Understand why teleworking and the demand for resiliency, improved telecommunications, 5G, and broadband are skyrocketing.
  3. Discover how technology is changing the playing field for physical infrastructure, and learn how to leverage and create smart networks.
