Communicating weather forecasts can be worse than playing the old “telephone” game. What the meteorologist told the supervisor gets reinterpreted when told to sw bosses which then gets second-guessed and distorted to other departments and residents. Next thing you kw, the likely 3-5″ sw with an isolated chance for 8-10″ on the rth side of town before dawn becomes, “We’re going to wake up to nearly a foot of sw! Get everybody in!” Like everything else in winter operational decisions, communication is key. Professional meteorologists are involved in many departments’ sw and ice maintenance decisions. With the most data, forecasts, and modeling available in the history of the world, forecast confusion seems to have grown exponentially. Your meteorologist can help you cut through the ise, as effective communication is critical to preparing for the right storm. This session will begin with tips for improved weather-related communication. Participants will be divided into small groups with forecast communication exercises. They’ll focus on actual sw and ice decisions. The presenting meteorologists will then lead all the participants as they present the challenges and ideas from their group exercises. These experienced meteorologists will help each group create takeaway tips to bring back to their departments.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be better able to:

• Make clearer decisions around treatment, scheduling, and fleet.
• Explain to their winter maintenance teams, PIOs, and department heads why they trust one forecast over ather.
• Sort weather data trends through questioning and conversing with both public and private meteorologists.
