This project case study will explore an “adventurous” project in Colorado. The City of Littleton contracted with Cutler Repaving to construct an invative, never-before-attempted paving treatment (full-width milling, followed by 1″+1″ heater repaving, including an integral stone-matrix asphalt (SMA) overlay). This national, regional paving association and APWA Chapter award-winning project achieved many of Littleton’s surface treatment goals. Design, construction, and delivery of this unique project will be reviewed, via description, photos/videos, project team discussion, and Q&A. This was a CIP project, resurfacing the badly deteriorated existing asphalt pavement along County Line Road. This is a heavily traveled, high-traffic volume commuter corridor with multiple intersections, businesses, and high-density residences. The nearly two-mile-long roadway included numerous width changes, lane configurations and intermittent curb/gutter/sidewalk sections, abutted separate county and DOT projects, in addition to lake and canal crossings. The city desired to resurface this section of roadway and sought out a method with “lower environmental cost,” a quicker construction time, and in a cost-effective manner. All of these goals were achieved by this process. Cooperation is key to all successful projects, but was absolutely essential on this one. Because County Line is such a high-volume, high-visibility, ultra-important roadway for Littleton, partnering/planning/outreach was organized well in advance.

• Recognize how and why this project was designed/constructed.
• Recognize the successes and challenges of this specialized project.
