A typical public agency targets its messages to an audience over the age of 18. But the ultimate owners and beneficiaries of our planned eco-friendly water reuse programs are our youth. From the inception of the Advanced Water Purification communication program in east San Diego County, as well as Pure Water Oceanside in the west of this region, youth outreach has been an important part of both recycled water programs. Since launching the outreach campaign in 2014, more than 10,000 people have toured the Advanced Water Purification demonstration facility, including children ranging in age from nine to 18. During the pandemic shutdowns, the outreach became creative with virtual reality videos with embedded gamification and engagement with schools that had to teach in online formats. During this interactive session, attendees will learn how to plan a comprehensive school tour or scout event for students from fourth grade through college. The presentation will focus on tailoring the experience by grade level and how to creatively incorporate videos, hands-on activities, experiments, and career education to achieve STEAM educational goals while maintaining interest and having fun. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Plan comprehensive school tours or student/scout events for students from fourth grade through college, tailoring the experience by grade level with creatively incorporated videos, hands-on activities, experiments, and career education.
• Discuss the benefits of and how to create an education program for youth while incorporating tactics to educate their guardians.
• Explain 360° virtual reality video and other emerging immersive techlogies (with embedded gamification) for public education and engagement.
