Running through a residential area, the Indian Hills Woods channel had been plagued by erosion and invasive vegetation for decades. Band-aid solutions to stop the erosion and protect private property and public infrastructure have only been marginally successful. In 2019, the City of Clive decided to implement a broader systems approach by bringing together a team of water resources experts, including multiple government and nprofit organizations, to analyze the current conditions and design a framework for the long-term improvement of Indian Hills Woods. The project’s goals were to develop sustainable restoration solutions that improved aquatic and riparian habitats and increased public interaction within this important natural corridor. The presenters will share lessons learned, including: Early and frequent communication with the public establish clearly defined goals and expectations. Logistics are key for this scale of project. Expect the unexpected and allow for it in the timeline. Be realistic about how these types of projects affect other duties. Keeping the project in-house allows for follow-up work and plan changes without change order upcharges. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Enhance recreation through pedestrian/bicycle access that accommodates interaction with the stream.
• Improve water quality through the stabilization of eroding streambanks.
• Increase aquatic and riparian habitat by introducing in-stream wood and adjacent native vegetation.
