The City of Pismo Beach City Council tasked staff to improve the quality of life for the City’s residents and improve the aesthetics of local neighborhoods. To achieve the council’s goals, staff developed the “My Maintenance” program. This program divides the city into seven maintenance zones. On the first Friday of each month, a member of the public works staff (My Maintenance Professionals) drives their zone very slowly with their construction lights on (for high public visibility), proactively looking for ways to improve the neighborhood. The My Maintenance Professionals will pull weeds, remove graffiti and stickers, tighten loose sign bolts, pick up trash, and document larger issues that will take more than one person to accomplish or that will take longer than one hour. The issues documented are added to the maintenance list, and crews will take care of them as soon as possible. To better communicate with residents, the city set up an email address where residents can submit special requests or ask questions of city staff. When the program was launched, door hangers were placed on every door in the city, and videos were posted on the city’s social media. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Recognize how to keep neighborhoods clean and provide a concierge level of service to the community.
• Demonstrate better communication with residents.
• Identify ways to track the needs and wants of their community.
