Organic waste management is a top priority for Los Angeles County and other local jurisdictions in California due to state law Senate Bill 1383 (2016). The purpose of SB 1383 is to reduce methane gas emissions by establishing statewide goals to reduce 75% of organic waste disposed of in landfills by 2025. It also requires that 20% of edible food that would otherwise be thrown away be recovered for those in need. To implement organic waste requirements for residents and businesses, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors adopted a mandatory organic waste disposal reduction ordinance in vember of 2021. LA County Public Works, in coordination with waste haulers, is educating residential and commercial customers on the organic waste collection requirements. Los Angeles County has made significant strides to comply with SB 1383 by amending existing waste collection contracts to include organic waste collection, establishing new contracts with waste haulers, and implementing a food recovery program to help feed food-insecure people. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Explain the complexities of Los Angeles County’s unique waste collection systems.
• Recognize the rigorous process large jurisdictions must undergo to amend or create new waste collection systems.
• Discuss the importance of educating the public to accomplish a goal.
