Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) in public works is silently rising throughout the country. There are over 5.4 million LGBTQ+ workers in the United States, of which almost two million are Black, Indigeus People of Color (BIPOC). Currently, only 20 states and DC have laws that explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. 25% of LGBTQ+ people report experiencing discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in the past year. Studies suggest that nearly 50% of LGBTQ+ workers remain closeted at work. Anti-LGBTQ+ bias is highly prevalent in the workplace and creates massive daily hurdles. More than 25% of trans employees were fired, t hired, or t promoted because of gender identity or expression. When applying for jobs, LGBTQ+ people of color (POC) report two times more discrimination based on sexual orientation. What can we do to make this industry a more appealing career option for LGBTQ+? There are national organizations for LGBTQ+ in the public works field. Panelists will explore their own work experiences in public works and offer suggestions to other LGBTQ+ and allies in the industry. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Explore an LGBTQ+ viewpoint of working in the public works industry.
• Identify some obstacles LGBTQ+ people face to progress in this industry.
• Develop strategies to create a more inclusive environment and attract more LGBTQ+ applicants to public works positions.
