When is it ok to “jump the queue?” Most urban municipalities are realizing the increasing need to be more efficient in their use of limited roadway space. As the population increases in urban areas, so does the need to develop more efficient modes of transportation. The costs associated with congestion in fuel and delay are leading motorists to seek alternative modes of transportation, and in turn, municipalities are seeking ways to promote the usage of high-occupancy vehicles. Since light rail is a costly investment for municipalities, a more attractive option for improving transit efficiency is Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). BRT, using Transit Signal Priority, along with queue jumper lanes, provides an efficient, effective way to move people. This presentation discusses the challenges and lessons learned associated with implementing TSP, queue jumper lanes, and BRT on a major corridor in DeKalb County, Georgia. It highlights issues such as bus operator education and training, queue jumper lane construction, traffic signal priority timing, as well as signal timing for the queue jumper signal phase.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Receive first-hand guidance on implementing Transit Signal Priority (TSP) in their municipality.
• Utilize the opportunity to learn from their peers.
• Navigate and avoid kwn pitfalls with implementing TSP and queue jumpers.
