The City of Houston, in coordination with other regional partner agencies, applied for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) TIGER 2014 grant to expand the existing Intelligent Transportation Systems infrastructure. With this project, the City has effectively improved its capabilities to apply several Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) strategies, such as enhancing its active arterial management and integrated corridor management capabilities. This project allowed the City to deploy a robust, reliable, and unique ITS program through the development and implementation of state-of-the-art and proven ITS devices, techlogy, infrastructure, and system to collect, process, analyze, and disseminate real-time information to the public, media, and regional agencies through synergetic partnerships within Houston TranStar. Houston Public Works (HPW), and the FHWA team, implemented a phased approach to the design, deployment, and integration of smarter traffic management system techlogy, devices, and tools to enhance quality of life and ecomic competitiveness. This has improved citywide arterial corridor system operations, management, and performance—thereby improving mobility and safety for motorists and goods, transit providers/passengers, and pedestrians. The HPW team is currently preparing for the next generation of “smarter” ITS infrastructure through efficient partnerships, evaluation, and testing of new techlogies and their integration into legacy systems. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Develop and promote ITS program to collect, analyze, and distribute real-time information.
• Identify hardware/software inventory needed to get the job done efficiently and effectively.
• Evaluate the benefits of data collection to improve operations within the available budget.
