Accreditation can seem like an arduous task, taking up a significant amount of valuable and limited staff time. That leaves many agencies wondering if the reward is worth the effort. This presentation describes the experiences of the Public Works Department of DeKalb County, Georgia. The presentation includes a discussion of why accreditation was considered, what problems were encountered, and the responses to those problems. Upon achievement of the goal of APWA Accreditation, the presentation will address the question, “Is it worth the effort?” And finally, the presentation will include a reflection on that same question a year after achievement, and how it has affected the county.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Gain insight into the process of accreditation.
• Recognize the benefits of accreditation.
• Make a decision whether or t to pursue accreditation.
