The “Intro to Hero” briefing provides information on how to fill critical vacancies through the creation of a training pipeline by building a successful school-focused, work-based learning program. Growing skilled talent, beginning with high school students, is a best management practice recommended by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and is being adopted by progressive businesses. There is a rapidly growing shortage of skilled labor, especially in occupations requiring years of experience and training. A significant concern is the decline of workers within these industries between the ages of 25 and 54, which is necessary to backfill aging workers who retire. The expected challenges from a shortage of workers for even the best organizations are more extended vacancy periods and higher associated sourcing costs. Organizations lacking competitive attractors experience higher attrition rates due to skilled workers leaving to work for other, more competitive organizations for more pay and/or better benefits. Additionally, personnel shortages place a higher strain on the incumbent workforce due to increased workloads to meet demands, which can result in a higher level of risk and burut, leading to personal injuries, burut, and increased attrition.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Communicate with local high school teachers and officials about career opportunities for students.
• Develop a progressive internal recruiting and training program.
• Develop career progression pathways and ladders leading from apprenticeship to organizational leadership.
