The City of Des Moines, like many agencies, is challenged by ensuring there are trained and qualified candidates to step into supervision and leadership roles in the future. Understanding that the best way to retain employees is by investing in their development and growth, the agency developed and implemented an in-house leadership development program in the summer of 2024. This session will provide a behind the scenes look at the decision to undertake this endeavor, what went into the development and execution of the program, and the benefits seen by supervisors and the agency, in general, because of the program’s implementation.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
1. Explain the benefits and challenges of starting a staff development program
2. Discuss key factors to consider when implementing an internal staff development program
