This presentation will introduce the audience to the Mile High Flood District’s modern approach to urban stream design, something they call High Functioning and Low Maintenance Streams (HFLMS). You’ll see a brief history of their approach to urban stream design, their use of fluvial geomorphology to better mimic natural stream processes, and how this applies to greenfield and infill development projects. This presentation will be a great resource for planners, developers, and open space professionals—anyone who deals with land use and infrastructure. Case studies and historical examples will be provided along with tips and tricks to apply these principles in the context of any urban waterway project. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Recognize the potential for higher functioning and more natural-looking urban waterway infrastructure.
• Identify the elements that must be considered to produce more functional urban waterway designs.
• Review the history of urban waterway design around the US.
