The National Weather Service’s National Water Center (NWC) produces products and data services useful for those engaged in public works. These products and services range from hydrologic forecasts to sw analysis to understanding the rarity of an observed or forecasted rainfall event. This presentation will highlight a number of products and services, including national-scale outlooks and discussions, sw analysis products, and NWC Visualization Services. These include forecast flood inundation mapping, precipitation frequency estimates, and the new National Water Prediction Service that will house all of these products and services. Additionally, this presentation highlights products and services under development including: total water level in the coastal zone, river ice surveillance, and applying social science to better reach underserved communities with critical weather/water information.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Use streamflow forecast products to enhance management of infrastructure and service to the public.
• Interpret flood inundation mapping services provided by the National Water Center in a phased nationwide rollout.
• Apply precipitation frequency information to better communicate the relative severity of extreme rainfall events that impact public works.
