As California communities and businesses plan to meet the California Air Resources Board Advanced Clean Fleet regulations, most of the attention has been on battery electric vehicles (BEV). However, many in the trucking industry believe that hydrogen is a better fuel choice for heavy-duty vehicles, such as waste collection trucks and over-the-road tractors. Hydrogen has long been considered a promising fuel for clean transportation and for combating climate change. The United States (US) Department of Energy has identified and is providing $1.2 billion to fund a Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub in California. The California Hydrogen Hub intends to produce hydrogen exclusively from renewable energy and biomass (including waste) and will provide hydrogen for public transportation, heavy-duty trucking, and port operations. Hydrogen-powered waste collection trucks are limited in the market and are t currently available in the US. However, truck maker Hyzon has recently introduced a hydrogen fuel cell powered waste collection truck in Australia, and it is expected that other manufacturers will follow suit. Hydrogen fuel cell and hydrogen combustion over-the-road tractors are currently more readily available in the US. This presentation will explore the status of hydrogen fuel for waste collection and transportation fleets and provide comparisons of hydrogen to BEV and renewable natural gas (RNG).
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Recognize the objectives of the US Department of Energy’s Hydrogen Hubs.
• Differentiate the pros and cons of using hydrogen as a vehicle fuel for waste collection fleets.
• Identify the state of techlogy around the use of hydrogen to fuel waste collection fleets.
