Every organization has a work environment which can help or hurt you in achieving your goals. In the ideal, your employees are valued and enabled to excel. They are provided with appropriate guidance and feedback that allows them to perform their current jobs with skill and excellence, and with the opportunity to improve their skill set, and to move their career forward. And those employees are committed to providing service to their communities. A good work environment provides many benefits to an agency: enhanced retention and recruitment of great employees; excellence at promoting and strengthening teamwork; and the creation of an effective, productive, creative, and healthy workforce. In this session we will explore several proven methods for building a positive work environment. These include using metrics to determine where your organization is w, and to provide a goal for where you want to be. We also consider issues surrounding workplace safety, as well as ways in which you can provide opportunities for your team members to excel and to show initiative. And a critical part of building a positive environment is having multiple modes of communication, so that information, needs, ideas, and concerns can flow in all directions among team members. The bottom line is that a positive work environment is a huge benefit to a public works agency, and we will discuss ways of creating such an environment.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
– Describe the ways in which the work environment can benefit an agency’s performance.
– Explain several approaches that can be taken to improve the work environment.
– Evaluate for their own agency which methods might provide a good place to focus efforts to develop a positive work environment
