Public agencies are increasingly asked to deliver high-complexity projects with tighter budgets and accelerated schedules. Agencies who position themselves as a “High-Performing Team” can better attract high-performing vendors (specifically the best team individuals, t just the logo!) to compete for their projects. This session will share specific practices for agencies to foster more collaborative relationships with their vendor teams and also develop their own internal project team skillsets. These practices are based on research findings from 3,000+ projects with $15B+ in value – it is amazing to see how high-performing teams across these projects all share similar characteristics! Tangible examples will be shared from a variety of public works projects, including engineering and construction, facilities management, parks, and waste management. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Recognize how becoming a high-performing client can reduce project costs and improve vendor engagement.
• Identify strategies to cut through the marketing “fluff” of vendor proposals and focus exclusively on high-performance indicators.
• Use best practices for increasing transparency across public works portfolios (and how this ultimately improves team performance).
