Florida, along with much of the US, is experiencing an ever-growing trend where landfills restrict biosolids disposal. Pasco County Utilities owns and operates four major wastewater treatment plants that generate approximately 23,000 wet tons of dewatered waste-activated sludge cake per year. Seeing the need to be proactive and change current biosolids production, Pasco County contracted with Merrell Bros. Inc to provide design, build, and operate services for a new Class A Biosolids processing facility. The resulting facility uses solar energy and limits fossil fuel pasteurization, ultimately transforming biosolids into usable material. Hear from the engineering consultants and the company who patented the process of converting aerobic sludge into fertilizer on how a utility can take a comprehensive approach to address their current biosolids program and direct it towards a long-term, controlled, sustainable solution. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Assess current biosolids disposal standards and better understand alternative solutions.
• Apply kwledge on sustainable options for long-term solutions that positively impact the environment and community.
• Describe a regional approach to bi-solids management.
