Over the past seven years, the Grand Rapids Water Department has grown from having a limited asset management program to outsourcing the assessment and rehabilitation of large valves in the city’s water transmission system to developing its own in-house capabilities to manage its critical assets. In the process, Grand Rapids has increased control and operability of its water system, saved millions of dollars by rehabilitating, rather than replacing large assets, and developed its internal resources to create a self-sufficient, sustainable, skilled maintenance team. This evolution has created new career paths for water department personnel and solidified the city’s position as a leader in proactive asset management in the US.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Recognize the importance of proactive asset management and identify the consequences of the failure to do so.
• Leverage the experience of others and accelerate the learning curve associated with developing an asset management program.
• Build their own self-sufficient, sustainable, and skilled maintenance team over time.
