Managing field crews in diverse environments performing a multitude of tasks has always been a challenge. Do those field crews kw where to go? Do they kw what to do when they get there? How do they indicate what they have done? There are a multitude of similar questions related to tracking fieldwork and communicating that information to promote informed decision-making. The City of Kamloops, located in the interior Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, tackled this problem by providing its field crews with mobile devices and GIS-based apps to give their teams the information they need. This enables them to record their activities for use by other field crews, crew leaders, supervisors, and the public with up-to–date, accurate information related to their daily activities. This presentation details the journey the City of Kamloops’s Civic Operations department took to modernize its operations to better serve its field crews, operational managers, taxpayers, and the general public.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be better able to:

• Identify methods for improving the efficiency of public works operations by leveraging GIS applications.
• Employ strategies for reducing individual and corporate risk while increasing overall safety.
• Enhance staff engagement through improved information-sharing.
