In the context of local government, the recruitment and retention of skilled and committed employees are vital for the delivery of essential public services and the well-being of the community. This presentation focuses on specialized strategies tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities faced by local government agencies. The session will present the City of West Sacramento, Capital Projects Department recruitment and retention journey over the last two years. Attendees will hear firsthand how the department went from 14% vacancy to 1% in two years and will hear about what retention and engagement strategies are in practice and planned for the future to create a culture of “stay.” Attendees will gain insights into invative recruitment tactics specifically applicable to local government, such as leveraging local partnerships, engaging with potential candidates, and promoting opportunities for career growth within the organization. Furthermore, the session will explore retention and engagement strategies, emphasizing the significance of a supportive and inclusive work environment, continuous professional development, and setting clear expectations for the future of their roles and the department.
