National traffic safety trends show a dramatic increase in traffic-related deaths, with the first quarter of 2022 showing the highest number of deaths in two decades. In the City of Carlsbad, injury collisions involving bikes and e-bikes have increased by over 200% since 2019, with roughly half of those being e-bikes in 2022. Community members have requested more neighborhood traffic calming, more enforcement, stricter laws, and faster implementation of the city’s program to adapt local streets to current and future uses, which include more biking and walking. Every city’s traffic challenges have unique hotspots of opportunity that require data to pinpoint the most effective use of limited resources to have the most impact. This session will help participants think creatively about how to redesign critical infrastructure, use invative approaches to source and analyze data and work with all city resources to establish programs to address road safety in a timely and effective manner. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Think creatively about how to work with all city resources to establish programs to address road safety in a timely manner.
• Redesign critical street infrastructure in a timely manner.
• Use data to tell a story and address the highest priorities in street safety.
