Doug Singer received an APWA Jennings Randolph International Fellowship for a Study Tour of Sweden focused on Ecosystem Services and Urban Nature as it relates to stormwater, flood control and open spaces for development. Traditional planning and development in rth America consider the value of social and ecomic needs separately from nature. The Swedes have developed the ecosystem services perspective to include nature and human wellbeing in urban planning. This presentation will show examples of redevelopment projects, climate adaptive flood control, green infrastructure, and urban tree programs from four Swedish cities. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Recognize the societal and ecomic benefits of urban nature.
• Evaluate ecosystem services in urban planning for redevelopment.
• Recognize that urban forest trees, stormwater, and green open spaces are assets to our urban areas.
