There has been a lot of ise recently about artificial intelligence (AI), especially with the availability of ChatGPT and other so-called large language models (LLMs). Lots of people have been experimenting to see how these new tools might impact their work, and as they experiment, lots of interesting and somewhat worrying results have been shared. When considering the impact of AI on public works, we have to remember that, depending upon how you define it, AI has been around for a while w, albeit at the simpler end of intelligence. Where we are beginning to see AI make a big impact in operations is in the area of decision-making. So how will this impact us going forward in public works? This presentation will begin by discussing how AI is currently used in public works (and in other areas, too) and examine how AI will help in making decisions in public works (and in other ways as well). Some examples that are in the process of being implemented will be presented, and the implications of these new developments will be discussed.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Define what AI is, and what parts of public works it might impact first.
• Compare the different ways in which AI might impact public works over the coming five years.
• Evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of using AI-based solutions in public works.
