In 2018, the City of Des Moines Public Works Department faced the impending retirement in a few years of many seasoned and long-serving supervisors, representing more than 280 years of experience. As is common with first-line supervisors, their replacements came up from the ranks of those same workgroups, all w holding leadership positions for the first time. With their years of experience, there was question of their technical skill to do the jobs. They knew the work but were still new to leadership and needed to build their leadership and management skills. This session will walk you through how the City of Des Moines Public Works Department has created and implemented a Leadership Development Group designed to build leaders for the next generation. It will take you from the initial idea phase to the implementation and execution phase of the group. The presenters will provide insight into the selection of materials and theories to implement, as well as deciding who the participants should be from your organization. You will walk away with a guide on how to implement your own group within your agency. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Develop a personalized leadership group for their organization.
• Identify qualified participants for the group.
• Select leadership materials for study.
