Developing a clear Statement of Work (SOW) can be challenging. Some SOWs may be vague or lack critical details. Others have requirements that are overly prescriptive and can limit vendor invation. Results from 20 years of procurement research will showcase how poor SOWs create a “tumbling domies” effect that brings risk to the owner. This presentation will identify the (surprisingly simple!) elements of an effective SOW. Templates for developing SOWs will be provided, along with a discussion of how to increase vendor invation during the bidding process. Tangible examples from a variety of facility contracts and construction projects will be shared (e.g., custodial, maintenance, design/construction, waste management, business services, and more). This topic is especially relevant given the significant pressures facing the service providers in the built environment (e.g., contractors). A clear SOW will attract the highest-performing companies to send their best people—with the best price—to work on your projects. After this session, participants will be able to:
• Evaluate their next statement of work using the provided checklist.
• Apply best practices in writing, refining, and engaging industry partners on their next project.
• Attract high-performance contractors and service providers to propose the next project.
