The Dallas County Inland Port encompasses large tracts of land, a facility operated by Union Pacific, multi-million-square-foot warehouses, and vast floodplain areas. The Dallas County Inland Port Flood Planning Study was created as a Texas Water Development Board Flood Infrastructure Fund Category 1 Project. The Flood Study Area, measuring approximately 230 square miles, includes the entire Hydraulic Unit Code (HUC 10) 1203010502 plus a small area rth of Interstate 20 within the City of Dallas. Major elements of the flood planning study include: Public involvement including developing a database, website, and marketing materials for the project. Public meetings to obtain feedback regarding the plan from the community, public agencies, utilities, and city stakeholders. Data collection of existing hydrologic and hydraulic studies from cities and agencies. An assessment of existing drainage infrastructure within the Flood Planning Region. Extensive flood mitigation evaluations of the major streams. A ranked list of ongoing and proposed flood control and mitigation projects and strategies necessary to protect against the loss of life and property from flooding.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Assess the Dallas County Inland Port area and appreciate the challenges that the Dallas County Inland Port faces—namely, growth, mobility, and land use changes.
• Acquire kwledge of the criteria used by the Texas Water Development Board to develop a list of curated, qualified projects for inclusion in the Texas State Flood Plan.
• Determine challenges in industrial flood-prone areas.
