This session will discuss process of how to construct a new athletic field from design, bid and installation and then how to develop a maintenance program to ensure safety and sustainability. Once a field is constructed it needs to be maintained. The key elements of a maintenance program will be presented including fertilization, pest control, cultural practices and inspection. The construction of a new athletic field will be presented with topics covered to include assessing the need and type of field, hiring an architect, developing plans, specs and cost estimates, bidding the project, construction monitoring and final acceptance.

After attending this session, participants will be better able to:
1. Identify the key steps needed to design a quality athletic field.
2. Prepare a turf maintenance program to properly care for a new field.
3. Evaluate their needs and capabilities for constructing and maintaining new athletic fields.
