When the City of Lawrence, Kansas, faced a $65M upgrade to their wastewater treatment plant, the city knew that collaborative delivery would be a critical tool for success. Initiating a project during a pandemic with market supply issues and price escalations while adding nutrient removal and maintaining plant capacity added additional complexities to a challenging project. This story will walk through the collaboration between the City of Lawrence/KU, Black & Veatch, and McCarthy Building Companies and how they are successfully navigating this $65M expansion for the city. Did we say seven years? Join us to hear how we were able to eliminate a year of construction and save money through plant operations/construction sequencing.
At the conclusion of this session participants will be better able to:
• Prioritize improvements in an inflationary cost environment.
• Recognize bidding and early good manufacturing practice (GMP) strategies to maintain budget and schedule.
• Use operational strategies to maintain treatment capacity through construction.
